No Police Escorts for Local Car Clubs?

I just got off the phone with Jim Cambron, President of the Heart of Dixie Region of the Porsche Club of America about their 50th Anniversary celebration that will be going on this weekend here in Huntsville. And one of the coolest things they will have is a line of Porsches spanning over 50 years of the car's heritage.

Well, when I asked him if he had a police escort for the parade, he told me how the Huntsville Police Department Special Operations Department which is in charge of these type of escorts has a policy of "not providing escorts for any car clubs." What an absurd policy.

With as much as the enthusiasts bring to the local economy and social culture of this city, as well as the lack of prosecution of illegals that hit our cars (from my own personal experience), I think this is a ridiculous policy. I mean, the Hot Rod Power Tour has a good chance of coming through the city again, and it looks like Huntsville once again will be turning a cold shoulder to those enthusiasts like they did in 2005.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

I'm sure they only do this because of certain 'clubs'. Because Joe Schmoe and his hillbilly friends want to parade around in their cars should not constitute a police escort.

With that being said, upstanding clubs and events like you mentioned should be exceptions.

This is absolutely absurd! We need to get together at the next city council meeting and tell them what we think about this. We need to explain how the city will benefit from the cars coming through the city. Also, that is a safety issue for those involved. Several cars of any type will draw attention to people passing by. These other drivers will be distracted and not pay attention to the road or surroundings.

If the city council controls this, then that's where we must go. This is a very good point. This town is full of enthusiasts and even more that will look at a car in traffic. A full parade of them is distracting to say the least and WILL cause accidents. By parading them through the city in a controlled environment, it allows the city to enjoy the parade as well as provides safety for everyone involved. Just look at Trail of Tears and imagine it without an escort.

It is probably about money. We have had disasters like a cop crashing his bike during an event also many years ago.

Beckham March 30th 02:06 PM

With or without a police escort a parade of cars can and will draw attention which could endanger others if people are not paying attention to the road.

I'm sure a blanket decision like this has to be related to something that happened. And if it's something in recent memory, there's not changing policy if the underlying cause hasn't changed.

But with an escort, traffic stops. That's where the safety comes in.

need to point out how many people are coming to huntsville, spending money, food, hotel ext.and how they (the club) MIGHT come back again if the city cooperates.talk to someone in the mayors office.in pigeon forge tn they shut down 4 lanes of traffic for the f-100 nats parade, and they don't really like the car shows there, but they know what brings in revenue.

And even how much local clubs spend on a regular basis. Every month clubs bring in revenue to restaurants all over town, not to mention driving on the weekends.

Don't expect the city of Huntsville to do anything reasonable. I've only been here a few years but all I see is the city wanting to suck in as much tax revenue as possible while providing as little as possible to "we the people."

All you have to do is look at the map of the city limits and see all the places the city snakes out, 10 feet to either side of the road and then balloons out to suck up a subdivision to see it...

Just a random thought. I would get a group of well spoken individuals to present this this case. Be organized and be to the point.

Well, if that's what butters their bread, then that's the angle to use. You know how much revenue the last National Autocross brought into Huntsville? It was a lot. :)

in the line of work i'm in, I use Task Force on a weekly basis. As a matter of fact I had a couple of units out today at Oakwood and Research with me. I will ask them what's up. I also have some contact numbers that you(norm. citizens) can't have:p. I'll see what I can muster up, or atleast what the reason is.

My husband is in SOD for HPD. He also spoke with his sargeant regarding this issue. He is trying to find out what he can do. He also suggested going to the city council meeting. That is how the majority of issues are solved.

Samir March 31st 11:14 PM

Great insight. :) When's the next council meeting?

cLc April 1st 01:27 PM

If this is going to happen there is alot of prep work that must be done before we just charge in there and say this is what we think. Need to have statistical numbers. People like numbers, showing how much extra tax revenue can be generated vs. the cost of escort its self. Have examples of other cities providing an escort. There is alot of number crunching to be done. Not trying to burst anyone's bubble, just being realistic about it. It's not something that will be taken care of quickly, it takes time to change policies.
