Smile Trufacts Racing Details a "BLACK" C4 Vette

This is a very special Corvette that arrived in our shop for a Stage 1 Polish job recently. In total the car took me about 14 hours to complete from start to finish. The customer had just purchased the car about a week before he brought it to me and it was in need of some serious love, so I rolled up my sleeves and got to work

Products list:
Exterior: Chemical Guys Citrus Wash (applied through foam gun to strip the car of any wax or sealant that is already on the paint to prepare it for polishing), then re-washed with sheepskin wash mitts using the two bucket method. Wheels were corrected using Sonax full effect. Tires were dressed with Poorboys World Bold and Bright. Claymagic blue claybar was used with Poorboys clay lube. Polishes consisted of a Meguiars 105, and a Menzerna Intensive Polish with an assortment of Lake Country Pads to achieve the best results. Chemical Guys EZ Creme Glaze was used after polishing to give the car an anti static charge and a nice deep finish. Finally the car was sealed with Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant to cure overnight and a Meguiars wax was applied on top of the Sealant in the morning.

Polishes were applied with Lake Country CCS Pads
Polishing systems that were used were a Flex XC 3401 VRG Dual Action Orbital Polisher, and a Porter Cable 7424 XP

Interior: Car was vacuumed, panels were treated with 303 Aerospace protectant, and Chemical Guys Stripper Scent was applied to give the car a fresher than fresh smell

Windows: Windows were clayed and wiped down with RainX after the car was polished and cleaned fully.

This is the car as it arrived the night before I started working on it

Look how low the front is with this car

Needless to say the car was in very rough condition when I got it but I was ready for it

This is one serious Vette people! Fully caged interior with Momo Seats and CCW's

To start wheels where cleaned with Sonax full effect which is a ph balanced wheel cleaner that is safe for any type of wheel finish.

Woke up early in the morning to get to work! Car was Foamed with Chemical Guys Citrus Wash to help strip it of any waxes or sealants in preparation for polishing. Followed by washing it with 100% Sheepskin Wash mits using the 2 bucket method with grit guards to help protect the paint.

Car was fully washed from top to bottom and brought into the garage to be clayed with Clay Magic

After the car was clayed it was rewashed and taped to finish all of the prepwork to be polished.

Starting with a spot on the hood I worked up the best combination for the car and ended up achieving good results with an M105/Menzerna combo

50/50 shot of the passenger side of the hood. I generally work in about 12 by 12 sections and here are the results of the Stage One Polish job that we offer.

This is the drivers side of the hood to give you a gauge of what the car looked like before polishing.

Here is the passenger side of the hood after polishing. I managed to get 65-70% of the defects out and the results are astonishing

Their was a sticker on the car that said Kuhmo sometime in its history

After I was finished with it you couldn't even tell it was ever their.

Passenger side of the car 50/50 shot for a before polishing and after polishing.

Drivers side 50/50 shot.

Rear quarter panel 50/50 shot.

Car was sealed with Blackfire wet diamond sealant after a Chemical Guys Glaze was applied and this is what the car looked like afterwards

The next day I waxed the car and finished up with the final touches to get it ready for pickup by the customer who went straight to the car show

He was so happy with the job that he let us put our logo on the side next to Jake

Rear of car when finished.

Side of car when finished. Looks like a brand new C4 now!

I was extremely happy with how this car turned out and am glad that I was given the chance to bring such a beautiful car back to life and give it a shine and depth that even Chevy themselves couldn't have done

I hope everyone enjoys the writeup as much as I enjoyed working on this car! Feel free to post any comments or questions about any of the work.

Thanks I really take my time in my work and enjoy it on top of that! Attention to detail in detailing is a key to success and it really shows in the end especially on a black car.

Amazing job Smiley. I'm definitely coming in for a Stage 2 on the Z soon. My paint has held up good for an '03 but I bet you can make it better.

With a Stage 2 Polishing job your car is going to look like it just rolled off the showroom floor ! Just be prepared to lose your car for at least 2-3 days because it is no walk in the park for that type of job! Let us know when you are ready for it and we will make sure to take care of you.

We don't really get into wet sanding to be honest with you. But for your question depending on how much clear your vehicle or the vehicle in question in hand has on it I would not put it behind me and have removed it before. It just depends on how much clear the vehicle has left on it to decide if I feel comfortable doing the job or not.

Also thanks for the kind words on the Vette

A paint depth meter will take that fear away. That's the next thing I plan to purchase. I know the first few black cars we went all out on took forever to do but with time your process will get faster and better, atleast it did for us.

I've been slowly but surely getting back into this with a good friend. There's good money to be made once you get a good process.

I agree that the paint depth meter would make wet sanding alot easier on the conscience. Every detailer has a method that he or she follows to finish a car. But different cars yield different results from the products that you use, so generally I start out on a particular panel on the car to test out which products will give me the best results for the whole car. We take our time on our customers cars to ensure that their cars get a proper treatment from start to finish every time. I have been detailing cars for quite a while now so I am very confident in my ability's to see a job through to the end the right way.

The way it's going Izzy, this car is going to need it again at the end of AutoX season!!! I hate to see your beautiful detail job get all scratched up...but the "show must go on"
I futilely try to keep it clean and polished up at the events - I get teased because it's hopeless.... Anyway, I say "If I can't win, at least I'll look good tryin'!!!"
