Customers with crazy ideas!

OK, so I have this customer that wants me to figure out how to put a VW TDI engine into a 1952 Chevy Truck. It can be done because I am going to find a way to do it. However, I am looking for ideas. Does anyone have a totaled out TDI car to use for parts? (rear impact or roll over)

Isn't there something to be said about putting German power (or lack their of) in an American Steel work truck? I'm sure there is...and I'm certain it isn't very positive lol.

MPG! He is not worried about hp or top speed. He wants to get 30+ MPG in town with the A/C on.

In my own cars I won't even fut a Chevy motor in a Ford car. In customers cars I will put in anything they are paying for and to add this is a challenge.

Why not a Cummins? With the right program, they can get close to 30.

Early 12V Cummin motors got pretty good mileage and mechanical so easy install. Or a 4BT Cummins. Seems like there's a few better options than trying to turn that motor sideways!

Is the owner aware that sometimes going smaller won't necessarily improve mpg? 52 Chevy Truck is about 4-times the weight of a VW TDI. I'm not a horsepower fanatic and do appreciate more with less but something designed for that vehicle size would get better mpg. They're getting over 30-mpg with LSx now (granted on the highway but you get the point). A midsize 6 or something along that line would get better mpg and wouldn't have to work as hard. A small engine at WOT isn't necessarily more economical than a larger engine at just above idle.
Seems like that setup would get great mpg, wouldn't be able to move the truck so can't measure mpg without moving. But he'd have A/C while sitting in it looking purty.

I realize that you get paid to give the customer what he wants. I've seen your work and it is great.

The original inline-6 can be built to get 30-mpg using modern technology.

It has a bed on it right? Well put the TDI in there or put the complete car in there for him to drive. What you think? Lol

as someone said, hauling around the weight with that engine... he won't get 30mpg... he'd be better off putting in a LS1... at least then he'd get 20mpg and actually have some power...

if this worked so well, you'd see big SUVs with small turbo I4s, lol... because trust me, GM and others WANT the gas mileage

Everyone has good points. However...I have had my hand in and experienced builds of VAG TDI motors pushing well into the 250+ hp and 300+ ftlbs range to know that these small i4 diesel engines can pull around that truck just fine with a little work. Thats just the ones i know of personally. I have read build ups about them pushing twice those numbers reliably. When we were putting together Lloyd's Golf that eventually made it into eurotuner and PVW it was an absolute beast of a motor and the majority of the work was all external bolt on and electronics. Dont count out the little German fella too quickly! Lol
