Veyron Super Sport hits 267mph

http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/v...paign=Facebook

Quote:
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport has set a new production car land speed record, hitting 267mph at VW's Ehra-Lessien proving ground. 267mph. Well, 267.91mph to be precise, or 431.072km/h, thrashing the 256.23mph set by the SSC Ultimate Aero in Nevada in 2007.

You don't need us to tell you this, but that is obscenely, absurdly fast. To set the production speed record is impressive. To smash it by 11mph is astonishing.

Then again, the Veyron Super Sport is an astonishing car. Effectively the final iteration of the Veyron, it shares the same 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder engine, but with larger turbos and bigger intercoolers to push power to 1,183bhp, a jump of 196bhp. Torque increases from 921lb ft to 1106lb ft.

It's lighter than the standard Veyron, too: that black'n'orange skin is constructed solely from carbon fibre, saving around 50kg. The Super Sport gets stiffer suspension, aiding high-speed stability and allowing lateral acceleration of 1.4g. Good work if you've spotted the new NACA ducts and reworked double diffuser.

The Super Sport will hit 62mph in the same 2.5 seconds as the standard Veyron (and never was such an adjective less appropriate), but its 0-124mph and 0-186mph times are reduced to 7.3 seconds and 15.0 seconds. 124mph in just over seven seconds. Yowch.

On the Ehra-Lessien test track, the Super Sports hit 427.933km/h (265.96mph) on its upwind run, before reaching 434.211km/h (269.86mph) on the return leg.

"We took it that we would reach an average value of 425km/h, but the conditions were perfect and allowed even more," Bugatti chief engineer Dr Wolfgang Schreiber said after.

Now, we wouldn't want to give anything away, but you know how TopGear has always been pretty intimately involved with high-speed runs in the Veyron? Remember, for example, James's blast to 253mph in Series 9?

Well, let's just say... it would have been a bit strange for us not to have been part of this astonishing record run in some capacity. We're not saying any more, but keep a close eye on all things TopGear in the coming weeks...
Wow, just wow.

Why do you hate orange tic tacs? That's one of the strangest things to hate I've ever heard.

Its nothing about the car, its the color. Like Tino's porsche, while its still a nice porsche and all, the wheels look like some doo doo to me. And yes I hate all types of orange candy...period.

That's still unusual. You'll have to tell me the story sometime.

No story, I just think orange candy is disgusting. EXCEPT-orange slice gummys- they are ok but thats it.

Oh and still, I wouldn't buy the car even if I had millions of dollars unless it was to be funny like driving it off a cliff. For the price of that car you could buy a ZR1 and make it alot faster plus if you got that kind of money its only 100 grand, go rally racing if you want, who cares?

I guess you feel about orange candy like I feel about grape candy, lol. It's interesting that you associate your feelings with the color.

I saw a zr1 for the first time last weekend at the show at point mallard and it was stickered at $121k. $106,880 for the base car, $10k power options package with a bunch of creature comforts, $2k aluminum wheels, $1300 in gas guzzler tax, $950 for destination, and $15 for the front license plate bucket. lol.

It's a pretty amazing car. I had no idea that it had almost an entirely carbon fibre front end as well as the roof. It also surprised me to see carbon ceramic brakes standard. Those are almost a $10k option on the Porsche 911 Turbo.

You could buy a ZR1 for much cheaper and put money into it, but you can also buy a Honda Civic and drop money into it and make it faster.

You pay for exclusivity and luxury with the Veyron.

Looks like we have a top speed war, gentlemen!

http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/s...own-2010-07-14

Quote:
SSC wants Bugatti’s record

It's like Rocky versus Apollo Creed. Only with cars. And better dialogue.

Just a week after Bugatti (with the help of James May, ahem) took the new production car land speed record from the SSC Ultimate Aero with a run of of 268mph in the Veyron SuperSports, SSC has announced it is out to get its title back.

In a statement on its website, SSC - which took the record from the Veyron in 2007 with a run of 256mph in Washington - has praised Bugatti's achievement.

'We would sincerely like to congratulate Bugatti,' runs the statement. 'When the Ultimate Aero broke the record in 2007, we knew it was just a matter of time until it was broken by someone else.'

But SSC wants that production car speed record back, and has enlisted designer Jason Castriota - who penned the Pininfarina P4/5, Bertone Mantide and has just been appointed to create the next generation of Saabs - to help out.

'We've been working on a new project to debut before the end of the summer,' the statement continues.

'Not much can be said at this time except that we'll be upping the ante on all fronts. Having Castriota as our lead designer enables SSC to reflect its engineering and performance in its aesthetics. It's impossible for us to be more thrilled about having him on board and we're anxious to show the world what we have up our sleeve.'

Game on. This top speed war might indeed be childish and entirely irrelevant to real-world motoring... but it ain't half entertaining.

I do like the paint scheme on the black and orange one just for the stand out factor, but I like the one Beck posted later much betta. I swear some of these auto designers do so well until it comes down to the wheels.

I'd still prefer a low mileage Z06 @ >$50k. Proven 1/4 mile in under 11 seconds stock is perfectly fine with me.

I like the subtle blue look. The carbon fibre just gives it enough to be attention grabbing.
