Forum Drama in a Nutshell

This was on the TVSC email list and I think it's a re-post, but still so funny and true about most on-line communities:

"Cut N Paste for East TN Riders forum:

How many motorcycle forum members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could
have been changed differently

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb"

another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is
perfectly correct

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this
discussion to a light bulb forum

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and
therefore the posts are relevant to this forum

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best
light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands
are faulty

5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs

15 People to post "I can't see S$%^!" and their own light bulbs

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and
signatures, and add "Me too"

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the
light bulb controversy

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

13 to say "do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"

1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that George W. isn't the brightest
bulb.

4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.

1 moderator to lock the light bulb thread.

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all
over again."

I'm so glad I don't have to deal with administrating anything like this. It would sure take out time from working on cool things like going to SEMA.

If you want to see some of the most angry people ever check out the bmw forum E90post.com (i think). There's some older guys on there that tear people apart.......however most of the people on it are dumb fresh out of college kids that are trying to step and have a big boy car. Still pretty funny to read them argue about keychains and things of that nature.....

It would be interesting to be a clinical psychologist and put every one of these people in their place by presenting them with their issues. There's no need to behave like this, old or young.

I mean, if people did this in real life, there would just be fights everywhere. I think there's a video out there where someone showed what this would be like from a more comedic standpoint, but I don't even know what it would be under.

Everyone has there e-personality. Some of the biggest ***** I've ever encountered have turned out to be really really nice people in person. It's easy to hide behind a keyboard. I guess after being on most forums for a while you either develop thick skin or move on because if you ever say anything stupid someone will prolly jump on you, atleast in most cases.

Yeah, that's generally the way it is on automotive forums, but it doesn't have to be. I've seen a lot of civilized places. Plus, ad networks won't sign you on if you have stuff like that going on.

The biggest one that kills me is "use the Search button"!!! Most times I don't even bother on some forums to ask questions because of this. I use the search option 90% of the time I have a question and 89% of the time the search option for most forums is DooDoo! It doesn't help you at all. It will just take words from your search and find where people have said that word in random posts that have nothing to do with what your asking.lol I usually just Google or PM a person any questions I have regarding something specific. Its much easier that way on a lot of the larger forums. VWvortex and FULLSIZEchevy are the worst I have seen for this.lol

Yeah, the search engines for most forum software is terrible. I don't know why since if you can't access the wealth of knowledge on a site, there's something missing. That's why a lot of sites have implemented a custom Google search.
