Very well said.

I spoke with someone this morning who has a pretty good idea of how a lot of that works from the inside as a former officer. It's mainly a revenue thing, which makes sense. Funeral escorts are a public service, while parading a car club is not so much. But I don't think anyone has brought up the point that clubs would be willing to pay for these services. It keeps our investments safe and keeps the roads safe for everyone else as well.

We'll find out as I try to work on an escort for the cars from the Fast 5 premiere event to the afterparty downtown.

But it makes sense. There's expenses in providing an escort, and it it's not an essential escort for the community at large, I can see them not providing them free.

But throw in monetary compensation, and then it's no different than off duty officers that are available for private functions.

I spoke with a Special Operations Officer today and he said that if there is a need for police escorts to call and talk to Sgt. McMillian with the Special Operations Division for the Huntsville Police Dept. He can tell you what options you have as far police escorts are concerned. There is even an option for paying off duty officers to do whatever you need. The officer also said that he felt that if you had an event permit that it might be something that could be done as part of the permit. But DO NOT CALL THE NORMAL HPD LINE. He said that dispatch will give you an answer that relates to reg. uniform officers and they don't do traffic control or escorts.

Sounds like to me that if you give them enough notice they are more than willing to work with you.

Excellent research Clint! I spoke with an officer from the SO department and he also mentioned that an off-duty officer is the most likely way to go. He also told about how good the people in their department are, knowing exactly what type of resources it takes to handle traffic.

Even though they would be off duty, they have access to all the cones and other equipment needed to do the job. They know what to do with traffic

Great info Clint! Do you have a phone number for Special Ops? I'm sure having it here would prove handy sometime in the future.

There appears to be a City Father attitude that gets in the way of car events on roads. Running and bicycle events seem to be able to shut-down roads easily. Maybe we could salt-in a few bikes and runners with the cars. Or maybe not.

several Motor Cycle clubs get escorts, they call it a toy run. Add a toy in each car for Christmas charities and they will be more inclined to help. Alabama A&M has a escort for their Football team and they get to run all the red lights. All that for one Bus. The A&M deal is escort by the Alabama State Highway Patrol. The same person BA talked about nixed the downtown cruise, His words were "" We do not need those type of people down town" It is the same thing Jimmy Record told NASCAR when they wanted to build a Super Speedway where I65 and I565 intersects. Bil Bill France built the track at Talladega ..
