2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype, Chevy’s new Grand-Am racer

2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype: Chevy’s new Grand-Am racer

Sigh. Another day, another Corvette. Yesterday it was the 2014 Corvette C7. Today it's the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype that'll race in the Grand-Am Road Racing Series next season. Although that one won't get a split-window, today's does.

Although the racer makes its competitive debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway on January 28th, the new Corvette Daytona Prototype will get a chance to play in a GRAND-AM test at Daytona International Speedway on Wednesday, Nov. 16th.

Four teams will sit behind the wheels of Corvette Daytona Prototypes in 2012: No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing; No. 10 SunTrust Racing; No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, and the Nos. 5 and 9 Action Express Racing teams.

"The 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype was developed by a multi-faceted effort involving Chevrolet, Corvette Designers, Pratt & Miller and GRAND-AM. Chevrolet also worked closely with chassis builders Riley, Coyote and Dallara," said Mark Kent, GM's Racing director, in a press release today.

All we know is that this one sexy Grand-Am racer. Seriously. I kinda want to lick it.

Also, you know, split rear window. Just sayin'...

I guess a lot of the Daytona prototypes share the same basic features, so the similarities shouldn't surprise me. It just doesn't have anything strikingly 'Corvette' about it at first glance.

Oh it's got more than that when you look at it. It has the center hood line like the c6, maybe the production car fog lights, the side gills like the grand sport, and the signature tail lights. That's all I've found so far. It's like playing where's waldo, lol.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype unveiled

New Grand-Am racer makes it debut in a test-run at Daytona today

Chevrolet has introduced the new 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype racer.

The Corvette Daytona will debut today in a Grand-Am test at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida.

Says GM Racing director, Mark Kent:

Quote:
"The 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype was developed by a multi-faceted effort involving Chevrolet, Corvette Designers, Pratt & Miller and GRAND-AM. Chevrolet also worked closely with chassis builders Riley, Coyote and Dallara. The IMSA GTP Corvette Prototype campaigned by Hendrick Motorsports in the '80s was the inspiration for this new Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype. And, like the GTP Corvettes, the new Corvette Daytona Prototype contains numerous styling cues from the street version of the Chevrolet Corvette."
Technical specs were not made available but the 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype will make its competitive debut in the 50th anniversary of the GRAND-AM Road Racing Series Rolex 24 which takes place at Daytona from January 26-29, 2012.

I would probably trade a few organs for the chance to own one of those! A small cruise to Tennessee to grab a few powerball tickets might give me a better chance lol

i wonder if the v split in the rear window is a styling cue from the C7?

Doubt it. It was brought up in concept pictures of the C6 as well, IIRC, but obviously that didn't go through. Everyone wants a split rear window, but GM never comes through unless it's on their race car.

I wonder if the spit window will interfere with the rear vision, It might need a rear camera. Or it could be "whats behind me is not in front of me" kind of thing.

That's a good point on the visibility, although I'm not sure the spoiler mounts also interfere in some way too.
