After years of the word 'drift' being associated with all sorts of drama in the local car scene, the sport finally has a local home with the area's first ever official drift event. No one really knew how many drivers were going to come out for this first time event at a first time location, but there was no shortage of drivers or number of runs. There were about 30 drivers, which is a really great turnout for a first time event.

Drivers lined up in the staging area

This was a day a long time in the making. There had been several different attempts by several different people to organize something for the local drift scene, but it never materialized until today. And it was really great to see the local guys who I've known for years showcase their talents in their own backyard--legally. And I was thoroughly impressed. My jaw was dropped open when I saw them do a 5-way tandem, and I almost forgot to video it. Great stuff guys!

Vido of 5-way tandem comprised of local drifters

And I'm really proud to know these guys. It's been a few years, and I've seen the drift scene make itself over a couple of times, each time growing stronger. They put in the work, and it really shows now from their cars to the driving. The event was missing some of the drifters of local lore, but maybe they'll be here for the next event. It would be great to see some of them that started it all come back to just enjoy it.

And the local drifters were joined with others from all over--Traction Optional from Mississippi, Tennessee Drift from the Nashville area, and drivers from as far away as Memphis and Atlanta. And everyone had a blast.

I shot so much media that I literally ran out of battery power on all my gear. And I was only able to take a few shots of the awards because of it too. But I got a few pictures of some very happy winners.

But the drifting was just part of the event. There was a great showing in the car show as well with some unique cars I've never seen before including a Rolls Royce Phantom and a Lamborghini Diablo--both local cars. I covered the car show part and then came back to find more cars, so I probably missed some. But I now have a better idea of what to expect so I won't miss anyone next time.

But there was also an SPL contest. And The Speakerbox brought out Roger's (s10on20s99) truck and Corvette, and the truck won the SPL contest, sweeping awards at yet another competition.

Huntsville Car Scene is proud to have The Speakerbox as a site supporter.

I want to thank Steve from Koss MotorSports for all his help in letting me cover the event, and I want to thank the Koss MotorSports staff as well as dr1ft@gious for helping keep me hydrated. I rarely realize how dehydrated I am until the end of an event. Thank you both for keeping me running and shooting all day long!

See everyone at the next event!

Outstanding! Good job! Some good news in motorsports here in Huntsville. This old guy will be there supporting this opportunity.

So weird that you can drift at Joe Davis, but its not suitable for Autocross...

Their other events seem to have great attendance, so hopefully we'll see a lot of out-of-towners too.

It specifically says passenger not passenger(s) so I would think no. I might actually enter my car in the show since they have a class for vette's.

I'm thinking the same thing. But hey, give Steve a quick call. He's really great to talk to.
