Deals Gap

Has anyone on here been to deals gap (tail of the dragon) up in TN/NC? A bunch of us mazda 6 enthusiasts are planning a trip out there for some fun soon and was wondering what I should expect. I saw a special on it from the Discovery channel one day and it looks fun as hell lol.

Well I plan on making a couple trips this year. I'm going to be attending the rotary rally from April 18-22 Although I'll be making a trip there before that probably at the end of February. Then the actual Mazda 6 meet dates are July 12-16. I plan on having me some fun this summer lol.

End of Feb is a great time to go (depending on rain/snow). Should have a lot less POPO to deal with.

The GTO bunch has a spring Tail of the Dragon run planned for early June. They usually have 30 or so cars that go

I go every year for Miatas at the Gap, and used to make a few day trips in the spring and fall. I don't go as often since the speed limit was lowered to 30.

man I just watched that myself the other day. I told the wife I want to do that and then they talked about all the wrecks and deaths they have had there and she was like umm I don't think so lol. I was like not to drive the heck out of it, just for a fun road trip drive .

At the beginning, There is a tree with motorcycle parts nailed all over it. It is called "The Tree of Shame". Do be dumb and get you parts put on the tree. It is dangerous because of the idiots that think it is a race track. The cops can be very unforgiving.

we had 56 cars, mostly all SS Cobalts, but several Ion Redlines, a couple SRt4 Neons, that VW Golf that was in front of me, lol.. a couple WRXs, etc...

^ yelp, not trying to step on anyone's toes here, but crotch rockets have just about ruined Deal's Gap... we went up there and broke into small groups of 10 cars or so, I can't speak for everyone, but my group kept it safe the entire trip, I made sure to get in with a lot of people I knew, because I made it clear I wasn't looking for a day of open Time Trials... A LOT of motorcyclist do, we had several come by us on one wheel... and what does that do? make it hard on everyone, because now cops stay on it CONSTANTLY

I agree bama. I hate those types. Had one like em that insisted on riding through the apartment complex at 3 am in 1st gear the whole time reving as high as possible. Those people ruin it for everyone. The tail of the dragon used to be pretty fun before they dropped the speed limit. Now you basically get no challenge from it unless your speeding.

your not the first person I've heard this from, and even from other riders have noted that some are trying to set land speed records instead of powering thru them safely and funner I might add. I would love to go up there, but with one on the way and due in mid May its a no go for this year, at least until late fall anyway

Great clip! I didn't realize it had some nice lookovers and such. But the dangers are just pretty insane. No guardrails. Great place for an SCCA hillclimb event, but it's not going up a hill.

Those are the riders that other riders refer to as 'squids'. I don't exactly know what the reference to them is from, but it's clear that squids don't last too long in the sport. They either crash and revise their riding strategy, or crash and give up riding completely. There are some that give up riding along with their life.

That's good to know. That was a really dangerous place for trucks to be. It's like being in on cramped urban streets. There's no place to go.

I knew there were bikes up there but I didn't think it would be that out of control. Thats the show I saw clint! The truckers were my worst fear of all, us coming around a corner and a truck coming in at the same time....wouldnt be fun. We really aren't TO worried about the speed limit its mostly just a get together of friends with the 6 so there wont be any time trials and such. Thanks for some good info guys!
