Watermarking is a solution, but that poses two problems--one, is that processing times will double or triple. So pictures will take a month or more to get up. Two, that watermark would be on the print too.

My memory is really bad, but I'll try to remember that you need to ask me a question.

Well I don't know if anyone else has purchased any pictures from the smugmug picture system that Samir has us up on now, but I did and I will tell you this...the picture I ordered a poster of looks REALLY good. It wasn't very difficult to get shipped and it showed up in a matter of a few days. I recommend it.

Good to hear. I knew they had a good system. So where's the poster now?

It's important to note that you need to have ie6+ or firefox to purchase prints. You can view the galleries with almost any browser.

I'm sure it's not a problem with your computer since you have a new one. If you're running xp, you'll be fine.

I voted no just because I take my own pics. But don't get me wrong, I think this is a GREAT idea. Sometimes you get so busy with the event that you miss out on some of the nice shots...but not Samir. He'll have about 5-10 shots snapped before you know it.

Keep up the good work.

I may be behind the times, but have you thought about selling the digital image itself? That way the purchaser could do with it what they wanted? Just a random thought. I do get them now and then.

And you do a fine job at it too! You're actually quite good with framing. I get inspirations from a lot of your shots. Maybe I should start giving you one of my cameras to play with.

The company I'm currently using doesn't offer Digital Downloads (DD). But I've looked into using another company that does, and also has a few other benefits to make processing pictures even faster.

The downside of Digital Downloads is what they do with them. What's to stop a magazine from buying a download cheap, and then using it on the cover of a magazine? The user license enforcement becomes a nightmare.

The pictures are actually just marketting material for Huntsville Car Scene. The newer picture system I'm looking into has a powerful custom watermarking system built-in. So my workflow would stay the same, yet would have watermarks, except on purchased prints. With watermarks in place, I can forget about the image saving protections and let people spread the pictures everywhere if they want since the Huntsville Car Scene.com name doesn't get seperated from the picture. That was the problem with the original system, and Huntsville Car Scene lost a lot of traffic due to that.

There's so much development work still left to do. This site is still nowhere near where I want it...

re: digital downloads

Could they not buy a picture and do the same? I don't know, I'm just asking.

It is possible to do that with a print, but it is much more difficult and/or there are quality issues. It's hard to get a magazine quality scan from an 8x10, even if the source picture was 8mp like what I use. So that's some sort of protection from image theft.

Here's a case in point on digital downloads. I shot some promotional pictures for recently signed Arrow kart driver Shelton Wright (www.sheltonwright.com) in return for being one of his sponsors. I gave him the digital copies of the pictures under the condition that wherever the photos are used, the credit "Photos Courtesy of Huntsville Car Scene.com" needs to appear.

Shelton was interviewed by the Decatur Daily and they did a huge article that appeared on the front page of the sports section on a Sunday. The article appeared without any credits for the photos. The Decatur Daily didn't ask for any photo credits, and acted like they weren't even going to use the shots that Shelton gave them. Even so, it is still their responsibility as publishers to make sure the images they are using are legal.

Huntsville Car Scene.com lost out on MAJOR exposure, and Decatur Daily made a profit from this. In my efforts to work out some sort of deal with Decatur Daily where Huntsville Car Scene could gain the exposure it deserved, they simply ran a correction and aren't willing to do anything more without me taking them to court. Frankly, they don't really care that they violated my copyright.

If people are going to have this attitude, then Huntsville Car Scene will not put itself in a position where it will take a loss by offering services such as digital downloads. It would be better for Huntsville Car Scene to close completely than to take continuing losses at the benefit of someone else.

You could also get a copy of a purchased print from places like wal-mart, but that's illegal without permission from the copyright holder. So it's possible that I can sue them for damages resulting from copyright infringement. It's a real hassle, but there is a case in Alabama where a photographer got $100,000 in damages for each picture that was illegally duplicated.

Bottom line, it is possible to do anything, especially with the technology that is available today. But the divide between digital and analog can be used as a fairly effective way to make this a real hassle, which is the current stance that Huntsville Car Scene.com takes to protect it's created content.
