In need of help

As some of you know I moved here in July. I have been looking for a job but coming up empty handed. No call backs or anything. I know Huntsville is one of those cities where you really need to know someone that knows someone to get your foot in the door. I'm asking for yalls help, if you know of anyone or a company hiring, or even might can speak to the person you may know that hires. I do need full time because not having insurance is not an option.

I have an Associates in Visual Communications, and using that for graphic design. I do have freelance experience. I've also worked as an auto adjuster years ago. At this point I'll take pretty much anything, it does not have to be graphic design. I feel my biggest downside is I don't have security clearance, as I've never needed it. Thanks!

SC can hurt in Huntsville, but a receptionist or similar shouldn't need it. I know that is less than you desire...but it is a position to start out in. Look up intergraph, they may have something. I don't believe my company is hiring any general positions (non-engineer) right now but I will look at our last position statement.

Good luck!

If you are good in the graphic design department. I always need someone to refer advertisers to for their ad design. And on a personal note, I might need a designer for my wedding invitations.

As far as permanent work, I'd talk to Signs by Tomorrow off Putman Drive as they're a woman-owned business that was rapidly expanding a while back. I'd also check out all the print houses. I don't think they'd ever post a job because their positions must get filled quickly.

Good luck!! This town is horrible for a job outside of the engineer/security clearance/government job sectors. Unless you like waiting tables--tons of that.

Check with TEKsystems here in huntsville it's who i started with and they got me a full time gig and my security clearance. They're also subcontractors on the newly awarded ITSS contract for the arsenal which should have over 700 full time positions on it. Many of those will be people who badge flip from their old company but a lot of people including myself have gotten other jobs elsewhere to avoid a possible paycut so they should have some entry level positions open. SAIC won that ITSS contract so check their site too daily

SAIC is torture to get in touch with, just so that's known. I've applied multiple times, and tried to contact them. Hear they are good to work for though.

I hear they have good benefits but dont pay so well. Then some people say they like working for them then I see how they treated a friend of mine who quit and moved over to SAVA (another company to look into that pays well and has positions supposedly).

For anyone looking for an IT position anytime soon check with the following companies as they are all a part of this big ITSS contract
Prime:SAIC
Subcontracotrs - Analytical Services, Inc (ASI), Enlogics Solutions, Foxhole Technology, Minerva Engineering, Oakwood University,
PPT Solutions, Inc., Systems Integration Modeling and Simulation, Inc. (SIM&S), TEKsystems, WaveLink Inc.,Wyle CAS Group. SAIC will perform 60% of the work and the other 40% will be spread across the subs. Be on the lookout for AMCOM or SAIC job fairs popping up. I know SAIC has already had one or 2.

Signs by Tomorrow isn't woman owned, FYI. Barry is the owner there.

RSA Gateway has confirmed tenants for an existing building as well as two more in the works. Might want to apply to Boeing as they were the last looking into those buildings.

Intergraph is in the process of building a HQ here in Hsv. The layouts look amazing.

Toyota plant is expanding. May want to look into them as well.

One SAIC group just finished hiring several people.

Best of luck.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely look into those mentioned. I've applied to SAIC multiple times but nothing has come out of it. Plus they want you to already hold a security clearance, so I know that's why they're not calling back lol. I've applied to quite a few receptionist jobs so I don't mind doing that at all.

Samir.....here's a link to my portfolio for consideration for both

Like i mentioned above TEKsystems got my security clearance for me when I hired on. I didn't make much but I was happy with getting that clearance and it's only gone up from there. Since they're a subcontractor on this SAIC ITSS contract they should get some jobs and would be more inclined than SAIC to get you your clearance.

Have you tried Inergi or Southern Conventions? Maybe the print houses? Allied, Colonial, Graphic Publishing.... I'm just thinking of some of the design houses that I've used in the past.

USAjobs is great..... if you're an engineer. I've browsed USAjobs for a long time and they don't have anything for anyone without an engineering degree (it seems like).

Your not going to land a usajobs job unless you've been a contractor for a while or shot at (military)

I checked out TEKsystems and it's really for the IT people. Nothing for the designer side. But hey, my resume is posted on there lol.

@Horsepowerheels....I haven't heard of them but I'll look them up. I contacted Media Works and Signs by Tomorrow, neither are hiring. I did a search for design firms here and came up with just a few, contacted two (one being Signs). But hoping the other will reply. Cold emails sometimes surprise you.

@Mark....I've looked there alot in the past. I've seen a few graphic design jobs, once in Germany. I got a reply email stating you must already live there for consideration. I was really wanting to do that one for some reason lol

Inergi: http://www.inergi.com/ They are a design house that does a whole lot of tradeshows, etc.

Southern Convention Services: http://www.scsworx.com/ Same thing, they do a lot of tradeshows. Ben Evanko was my account specialist when I used them, but that was several years ago.

Graphic Publishing: http://graphicpublishing.com/ Bennett Perrit is the owner, nice guy.

One thing I have learned is that even if they say they aren't hiring, they are if the right person comes through. Companies want to grow, and if they feel you can help them do that...then guess what?

Also, it seems like a lot of people don't know how to be persistent without being annoying. It doesn't hurt to call every week or two and remind them of yourself and remind them what a benefit you could be to their business. You may do this already, but if not, I would start soon.

Also, USAJobs is a joke. Government hires from the inside or from you knowing someone. That site is simply up for the fact they have to post the jobs publicly. Of the probably 40-50 people I know who graduated around my time, zero have gotten anything off of that site. Small sample group, but it still says a lot to me.

Good luck with your search but I can't help to think that building something based on your skills is the best route. Sure it is hard to distinguish yourself, but you knew that going into it hopefully.

Well yeah man, who do you think they are going to hire? Joe blow off the street or the contractor that they have worked along side for the last 5 years? Government work is ALL about who you know, not what you know. Some of the highest government employees are total morans.
