Between the "my fast" and "v-dub" series of commercials, I think VW has hit the mark with the younger generation. I can't get enough of these ads.

There was a good discussion of the VW ads on the navwc email list. Let me see if I can get some of those links. One was to a pretty good article that brought up some interesting issues as well as links to some of the old commercials.

Some comments from the email list:

"They're probably going to be some of
the most popular commercials this year, an example of
good targeted viral marketing, but they'll always be
eclipsed by the "Unpimp--German Engineering" and
previous VW commercials.

I would say if their goal was to reach the 25-34
year-old demographic, which the author referred to as
the "beer-pong" crowd (I love that one!) , then
mission accomplished. But, if they are going to run
the ones with the unfortunate ladies in them, then
maybe they should change the last line of the Fast to
"My fast doesn't mind sleeping on the couch... it's
like camping"."

My other favorites:

The ball bearing that rolls along the seams of the Nissan Altima (I think), showing how well the fit and alignment of everything is.

Then the Chevy S10 commercial that came out next spoofing that one. A ball bearing starts rolling along the seams, then one drops onto the roof. Next thing you know, about 5,000 ball bearings fall onto the truck, showing how tough the paint is.

The two guys standing underneath a tree and they're throwing their shoes up into the tree and suddenly a red VW GTi falls to the ground. Then the guy picks up his shoe and says, "Next time, let the clutch out slowly."

That's definitely a good one. I think they disassembled about 3 cars to get the parts for that commercial. And on top of that, some of those 3 cars were significant for their assembly (I forgot why).

Yep, that was the 93/94 Altima. The first gen. I still have one of those that was a very limited edition SE with LSD from the factory. Those first cars were VERY high quality. The motor was so silent you couldn't even hear it, and it had more power than the later versions. I miss that car.

Awesome link, Dolpe. That same page, the one called "Memories" where the dad reminesces about all his life growing up with VW's, then gives his son his first VW, a Beetle, as a birthday present... wow, seriously... a single tear rolled down my cheek.

Those are huge files, 8-12mb, but the quality is amazing! Why don't more american car companies make car commercials like those? Those are the Volkswagen commercials I'll always remember, not some cross between an eight ball and Darth Vader, a.k.a the Fast.
